It's a very special place and well worth visiting for a hike in Wicklow. The spot here where I painted is at a lovely bend in the Glencree river. As you walk around this forest you go up the track until you come to the top and see the Scalp in front of you. The drop goes right down to the road far below that leads to Enniskerry. The huge granite outcrops are full of massive boulders, many of which have fallen down the steep sides of the valley over time. The Scalp comes from the Irish 'An Scailp' which means chasm, it's a really interesting place and one of my go to places for plein-air painting sessions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis spot here is in the area towards the top of the outcrop where there are \u003cmeta charset=\"utf-8\"\u003emany species of trees, Scots Pine, Oak and Birch to name just a few. The Oak at this spot is a beautiful mature tree and the tracks that wind through this area make for really interesting compositions. The ruined buildings of the village, the old machinery and slag heaps all give you an awesome sense of the past. If almost feels haunted here when you are alone painting here for days. I really experienced a sense of being alone here when painting and was very conscious of the people that lived and worked here in the past. There is a special light here at Glendalough and painting this in late autumn the colours of the landscape change significantly from summer time. I am continuously drawn to this area of Glendalough because of the Glenealo valley and the light effects that happen here during the day. The huge shadows that fall across the area are a big driver for me with the cliff walls forever changing during the day. Its a beautiful area of the Glendalough upper lake with the winter trees giving it a ghostly feel. The voices of walkers travel from the cliff crests down over the the lake to you as well as calls of deer, goats and birds of prey. It's a wonderful place that sees a lot of hikers coming through on their way around the Spinc loop, but painting here for long sessions I found myself alone for the majority of time only getting the occasional visit from the goats that live here who are descended from the goats the miners brought to the area in the 19th century.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a real challenge to complete a painting this size in a location like this due to the canvas acting like a sailboard but I loved every moment of creating this piece.
