The Miners Village, Glenealo Valley, Glendalough
The Miners Village, Glenealo Valley, Glendalough
View of the miners village, looking west to the Glenealo valley which leads you up into the valley and up to the Spinc. This valley and river features in a number of the paintings I've painted here in Glendalough.
The miners village is a very special place on the route walk known as the white route. The ruined buildings of the village, the old machinery and slag heaps all give you an awesome sense of the past. If almost feels haunted here when you are alone painting here for days. I really experienced a sense of being alone here when painting and was very conscious of the people that lived and worked here in the past. It's an amazing place, the landscape is so dramatic with my favourite Glendalough shadow that constantly moves as the sun is hitting the Spinc ridge and casting an enormous shadow, I was trying to get that sense of the foreboding shadow in this piece.
