The Mountain Glade
The Mountain Glade
This is one of a number of pieces painted plein-air on site at the beautiful Forest area of Barnaslingan which is a large hill area in Dublin, the Scalp is a very narrow glacial valley that cut though here in the ice age. As you walk around this forest you go up the track until you come to the top and see the Scalp in front of you. The drop goes right down to the road far below that leads to Enniskerry. The huge granite outcrops are full of massive boulders, many of which have fallen down the steep sides of the valley over time. The Scalp comes from the Irish 'An Scailp' which means chasm, it's a really interesting place and one of my go to places for plein-air painting sessions.
This spot here is in the area towards the top of the outcrop where there are many species of trees, Scots Pine, Oak and Birch to name just a few. The Oak at this spot is a beautiful mature tree and the tracks that wind through this area make for really interesting compositions. This painting took two full day plein-air sessions at the spot.
