This is the second and larger version of my view down Glenealo Valley, painted on location high up on the track leading from the miners' village below. Familiar to hikers of the Spinc walk (or White route) in Glendalough, this vista captures a breathtaking descent towards the miners' village, particularly if you begin your hike from the Poulanass Waterfall end.

The scene features fascinating disbanded mining works and slag heaps, which add a unique character to the landscape. I’ve painted this view twice, with a smaller piece completed before this one. Both paintings were created from the same vantage point, about halfway up the track leading to the bridge further along.

While carrying painting gear up the windy track is challenging, the experience of spending hours in this stunning location makes it all worthwhile. The atmosphere here when the sky clouds over and the light dims can be eerie. While painting here I try to imagine what the area below would have looked like with a working mine and the village full of workers busy at their work
